Movember is Upon Us

Shave your face and start fresh. Pick your mustache design and grow for a cause. Its Movember time.

Each Movember, formerly the month of November, men are challenged to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache. The moustache is a ribbon by which we raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer and other mens’ health issues. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the commitment is to grow a moustache for 30 days.

The Movember Foundation has garnered quite a following since established in 2004 in Melbourne, Australia. The foundation has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more than 1.1 million men and women worldwide to date. No matter the country or city, Movember will continue to work to change established habits and attitudes men have about their health, to educate men about the health risks they face, and to act on that knowledge, thereby increasing the chances of early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.

Movember.com has countless ways for you, your family and company to get involved, including registering and tracking your moustache progress. There are even prizes for those who go above and beyond the call. Register today and commit yourself to the “Mo”-cause.

Witch Hazel

ESSENTIAL

The Magical Powers of Witch Hazel

Now that Halloween is over and most the witches and goblins are off the street, try the magical powers of Witch Hazel with our OM4 aftershave splash. The leaves and bark of this North American shrub were used throughout history medicinally with proven astringent, toning, and anti-inflammatory results. Witch Hazel has all the benefits of alcohol without the potential side effects. Witch Hazel is the perfect solution for counteracting increased oil production in male skin (male skin is 20% oilier than female skin due to testosterone). Witch Hazel also minimizes blemishes and reduces large pores. Effective on oily, dry, mature and problem skin, we love it so much; we’ve added it to all of our Step 2: Balance products.

Fair trade fares well for consumers & producers

by admin - June 10th, 2011

Are you familiar with fair trade products? The term “fair trade” has become much more prevalent recently. Many products tout this label, but many consumers seem unclear on what exactly this means, and why a fair trade label can make a product more expensive. I’ve done the research for you and am pleased with what I’ve found.

Essentially, fair trade means that products and commodities have a determined, standardized price. This price takes labor costs, production costs and the costs of shelter, food, clothing, education and healthcare for the producers into account, meaning that an adequate portion of the money you spend on a good will go into the pockets of the individuals who produced it.  Products that are created in non-fair trade ways do not have this guarantee. This means that the price you pay for a bag of coffee, a skin care product or bottle of wine may be high, but that your money will not go to the people who produced the good–nor towards their well-being.

In today’s global economy, it can be hard to remember that many of our products are made far away, in places we may never visit, by people we may never meet. Because of this, it is easy to pay a low price for a good without thinking of the repercussions for the people who made it. Buying fair trade can be more expensive, but you can rest assured that your money will go into the right hands–the hands of the people who made the product.

Remember, Organic Male OM4 and Eminence Organics of Hungary value fair trade, and obtain ingredients in fair trade manners and produce products under fair trade standards. By being a consumer of these brands, you are supporting something much larger than these companies: justice and fairness.

What are some of your favorite fair trade products?

Prevent, don’t correct.

by admin - May 20th, 2011

If you know anything about cars, you know that the most important way to keep one running well is to maintain it well. Regularly flush your fluids, change the oil and replace belts. Taking small steps like these ones prevents  having to do extensive repairs, like transmission and engine replacements, and it also keeps a classic car from becoming a “hunk o’ junk” car.

Well, the same goes for your skin. Taking steps like moisturizing, cleansing and treating with a serum all help to prevent the necessity for larger repairs, so to speak. We call this prevention. Recently, I read a few articles about the growing market of plastic surgery for men. Plastic surgery, on the other hand, would fall into the correcting category.

One of the articles I read referenced the president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons as saying, “As you age and gravity takes over, surgical procedures that lift the skin are necessary in order to show significant improvement“. Here at OM4Health, we respectfully disagree with this statement. While plastic surgery may be an option for skin that has not been maintained, there are natural, simple ways of delaying the onset of aging and maintaining our youthful appearance–negating the “necessity” of plastic surgery. Organic Male OM4 brings us products meant to lift, tighten, smooth and protect the skin from the elements, gravity and time. By protecting and maintaining your skin the same way you would protect and maintain a classic car, you avoid the need for extensive repair to your skin. Please, do yourself a favor and prevent, don’t correct.

Yurt! A fun word to say, an even more fun way to live.

by admin - April 26th, 2011

Recently, my wife and I loaded up the dog and went on a short vacation down the Pacific Coast. Along the way, we decided to stop at an Oregon State Park to camp. Much to my chagrin, there were no vacant tent sites (Note to self: Always call ahead.). There was, however, a vacant yurt. A yurt? I had never heard of such a thing. When I saw it, however, I knew I had discovered something life-changing.

Yurts are, in simple terms, dome-shaped structures constructed of a lattice wood frame, generally covered with canvas, felt or another heavy-duty fabric. They are comparable to a tent, but more permanent. And, when staying in one, you bring everything you normally would to camp, except fr the tent. Yurts are for lovers of camping that hate sleeping on hard ground.

Our yurt–while rustic and sparsely furnished–was decidedly one of the best vacation lodgings I have ever had. Being able to enjoy the comforts of home, like a comfortable bed, electricity, locking doors and a space heater, along with the luxuries of nature (short walk to the beach, fire pit outside, clear view of the stars) was an entirely new experience for me. I won’t even mention the low price, for fear that I will never be able to book another yurt if word gets out about how affordable and comfortable they are.yurt

After such an enjoyable experience, I can safely say that my wife will never revert to tent camping and that I have determined my retirement plan. Yurts have incredible history, potential for self-sustainability and the capability to be portable. There is not, however, running water. I am happy to report that I did not forget my OM4 EcoPur Natural Hand Sanitizer, and was safe from any lingering staph, e. coli or pneumonia bacteria left behind by the previous guests.

I want to share my yurt experience with as many people as possible. Have you stayed in a yurt? Please tell us your story. And, if you haven’t, please go as soon as possible. You’ll love saying the word yurt, but you’ll love the experience even more.

Dirty Dan gets clean

by admin - April 9th, 2011

Do you come home from work with dirty hands? Do they stay stained, even after washing? Among my circle of friends, I have the cleanest hands. It’s understandable. I work behind a keyboard, while many of my buddies get their hands dirty on engines, taking apart locks, making art or landscaping. Sure, washing hands is easy enough, but hands seem to inexplicably retain dirt, even after washing. I often hear from many of them that even if skincare does fit into their lifestyle, their hands simply aren’t clean enough to apply it. Well, I have a solution: Start with a cleanser.

Organic Male OM4’s cleansers clean the face, but while your hands are busy scrubbing the face, they’re getting some cleansing action too. We all need to cleanse. Not just because it feels awesome, but because we live in a world full of dirt, grime and germs. Even if we didn’t live in such a world, our skin produces enough dirt, grime and germs that cleansing would still be beneficial to our health. You see, our skin has what might be referred to as a forcefield, called the acid mantle. The acid mantle is key to keeping our skin (and body) healthy, as its naturally acidic pH keeps most contaminants out. Cleansing helps the acid mantle to do its work, but many cleansers can actually strip the acid mantle, particularly when they contain a very common ingredient called sodium lauryl sulfate. Great news! OM4’s cleansers contain none of this. Cleanse your face, cleanse your hands and keep your forcefields up. You can’t go wrong.

My appliance is more efficient than yours…

by admin - March 12th, 2011

kill-a-wattI’ll admit, I keep my computer on 24/7. A buddy of mine told me years ago that turning it off actually used MORE power. I don’t know if that’s true, and frankly, I’d rather go on a hike in the San Juan Islands than worry about my appliances.

However, here at OM4 we believe in caring for the world around us and practicing a Green, efficient lifestyle. Luckily for us, there is a win-win to this scenario, thanks to the folks who invented the Kill-A-Watt.

The Kill-A-Watt is a device that accurately measures electricity use. You can learn which appliances are driving up your power bill, and which ones are running efficiently. A large LCD display counts consumption by the Kilowatt-hour. You can figure out your electrical expenses by the hour, day, week, month, or even year. This is great for cost forecasting, and is accurate to within .2%!

This gadget gets the OM4 stamp of approval, and is on sale at ThinkGeek.com! Start helping the world, one appliance at a time.

Are you a “Typical” man?

Glutton for punishment?

A friend forwarded me the following:

Warrior Dash

Whether you enjoy running or not, that looks like fun.  That looks like the kind of thing you train hard for, like doing sit-ups, lunges, bench-presses and other assorted things that get your body into tip-top shape.

And so it begins …

I head out into the city to mold my body into a fighting, warrior dashing machine.  Sweat pours down my face. I run through smoke, mud splashes on my clothes and face, and the pollutants in the air attack my lungs. I return home to my wife, who says, “Get in the shower now!”

So, while training for such an event or simply living day-to-day, how do keep your skin looking like it hasn’t been dragged through the mud?  The answer, I’ve learned, is simple.

Wash, Balance, Bioactivate, Defend.

The trick is to make sure that the good stuff you put on your face stays in, and the bad stuff that wants to get into your skin stays out.  Fortunately, OM4’s moisturizers feature some hi-tech organic goodies to do just that.

Take OM4’s Environmental Defense Hydration Complex.  An application of this moisturizer serves two purposes: (1) to provide a non-oily and shine free barrier which retains moisture, and (2) to protect against the penetration of harmful environmental baddies.  So not only does it keep your face smooth and soft, it also keeps out the sweat, smoke, acid rain, dirt, grease, motor oil, and whatever else might attempt an attack on your sexy mug.

And so I train, with plenty of pain, which will hopefully lead to some gain, and I know that my face will be none the worse for wear when this is all said and done.

How do you keep your face looking the best through all the rigors of life?  Let us know!
